'Time to Accelerate: Together Against Cancer' is a manifesto of recommendations for the future of cancer policy across the European Union. It represents the input of organisations and individuals active in pan-European cancer policy, including the Hellenic Cancer Federation (ELLOK).
The manifesto’s recommendations reflect perspectives gathered during an unprecedented five-year period in EU cancer policy, which has seen landmark investment through both Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan and the EU Research Mission on Cancer.
Cancer is the second most common cause of death in Greece, accounting for 27% of Greek mortality each year. That's far higher than the EU average of 18%. While health policies in Greece have improved, more must be done to ensure fair access to quality cancer care.
Other data identified by The European Cancer Pulse:
*80.2% of women in Greece (aged 20-69) have self-reported their last cervical smear test in the last 3 years. The EU average is 70.8%. Only 13.2% of people aged 50-74 have self-reported their last colorectal cancer screening in the last 3 years. The EU average is 40.5%.
The European Cancer Organisation (ECO) has partnered with ELLOK to spotlight the manifesto’s opportunities for improving cancer care in Greece. Both organisations will help raise awareness during ELLOK's 8th Annual Congress and during World Cancer Day.
The Hellenic Cancer Federation represents 46 member organisations from across Greece, informing and empowering them to help shape needed health policies.
ELLOK champions comprehensive, timely and affordable care for all cancer patients, without discrimination. It seeks high quality diagnosis, treatment, psycho-social support, rehabilitation, and reintegration into social life.
ECO's visit to Greece provided an opportunity to meet with many key stakeholders in cancer care delivery, including Deputy Minister for Health, Marios Themistocleous, and General Secretary for Health Services, Lilian Venetia Vildiridi.
Coinciding with World Cancer Day on Sunday 4 February, the country visit and ELLOK's Congress saw several important announcements by the Greek Government:
The first of several planned visits to European countries, the ECO delegation completed a packed schedule of meetings and was encouraged by the increasing alignment of cancer policy initiatives in Greece with the pan-European aspirations represented by Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan. This has included the recent establishment of a successful HPV vaccination programme targeting both boys and girls, and better access to breast cancer screening across the country.
The European Cancer Pulse Country Report for Greece also helped identify future policy initiatives – as promoted by the EU Council Recommendations on Cancer Screening of December 2022 – and highlighted Greece’s experience with the crisis in its healthcare workforce, a major problem throughout Europe.
The right to be forgotten was another key talking point, as Dr. Françoise Meunier – smartCARE Advisory Board Member and close friend of ECO – addressed the issue during a panel at ELLOK’s Congress. ECO’s recent statement on the Right to be Forgotten was one of several documents that were translated and provided to Congress participants.
During the congress, ECO Past President Andreas Charalambous, Head of Policy Richard Price, and Senior Coordinator Norbert Couespel took the stage on 3 February to spotlight ECO’s work and the manifesto.
Alongside highlighting specific policy recommendations for the EU on cancer prevention, early detection and combatting the workforce crisis, Richard Price asked participants to further promote the recommendations of the manifesto by encouraging any candidates in the upcoming EU elections to support Europe's Beating Cancer Plan by:
He encouraged each participant at the ELLOK conference to take three steps forward by: publicly endorsing the manifesto campaign; sharing the manifesto with their networks; and to get in touch with candidates during the European Parliament election campaign.
